Disneyland Day

Samantha chose Disneyland for her theme day.  We learned a little about Walt Disney and Disneyland in our daily warm-up crossword puzzle.  As we were focussing a little more on “Frozen,” we played a new frozen tag game in the gym and did a snowman relay.  In the afternoon we made “melting Olaf sundaes” to eat while we watched “Frozen.”  We also made Mickey and/or Minnie hats while watching.

Football Day

George chose football for his theme day.  (This one stretched me just a little bit!  Though I did find the right occasion for wearing the Rider t-shirt I was given last fall…)  We started off the morning with a football puzzle and a video of George’s football team in action – set to music, of course!  George also brought a couple of his football jerseys to show us, as well as a poster he made of NFL team logos.  For art, the kids designed their own football jerseys; they picked a team name, colours, logo.  To end the day, we had a tail-gate party (hotdogs, chips, football-shaped brownies) in the parking lot and then played some games, which did involve a football.

Santa Day

It felt a little weird to have a Santa Day in June…but we did it!  This was Mathew’s theme choice.  Mathew brought an old picture of Santa and some information to share with us at the morning meeting.  We did a Santa crossword puzzle to warm up our brains!  We also played some Santa-themed games in the gym, did some Santa-themed word problems in math, read Santa stories.  And we ended the day by making Santa cupcakes.  Here are some pictures.

Science Centre Field Trip

This past Monday we spent the day in Regina at the Science Centre with Miss Evans’ (Mrs. J.N.’s) Grade 2 class.  We had a great day playing with all of the interactive activities the Science Centre offers.  Some of us caught a fun show on cryogenics!  We also saw a 3-D IMAX movie called “Lemurs” and enjoyed lunch out on the lawn.  (We divided into groups to explore; I was with the girls for most of the day, so I’m a little short on pictures of the boys.)  Thank you to Mrs. Gieni, my daughter Shea, and Riley’s mom for helping out.  We also had our new student, Salsabe, and her dad with us.  They have just arrived from Syria and do not speak English yet.  (The kids have been doing an awesome job teaching Salsabe!)

Candy Day

These kids have figured out the system…Sean chose candy for his theme day (a boy after my own heart!)  Sean brought a candy poster he made to present to the class.  We ended up going swimming the afternoon of Candy Day so Sean’s theme was covered over two mornings instead.  We did a word search of different types of candy.  Did you know that some candy, like dark chocolate and peppermint, are good for you?  We couldn’t do a candy theme without doing the old Mentos and Diet Coke experiment.  Make sure you check out the awesome picture that Avery took below.  And we did the Gummy Bear Dance, of course.  We read some great candy stories.  We also made paint with M & M’s and painted some delicious-smelling artwork.  And we made candy bugs!

Spiderman Day

Drelin chose Spiderman for his theme day.  We had a very fun day.  We started by playing “Spider Tag” and “Spider’s Web” in the gym.  We did a spiderman word search for our daily warm up.  Did you know that Spider man is the only superhero (not side kick) that was a teenager?  Drelin presented the Spiderman poster that he made.  We had a bunch of Spiderman graphic novels to read.  We watched the very first episode of the original “Spiderman” cartoon (remember the theme song?)  And we painted some Spidermen to hang from our ceiling.

Reading Away

As the year quickly comes to an end, we continue to read daily during Daily 5.  It’s fortunately still a time during the day that everyone settles in, is calm, and enjoys the opportunity to read some great books.  There are new books to read each week that go with the kids’ themes of choice.  Here are a few pictures of late.
